Company history

United Concordia Companies, Inc. (“UCCI”) was originally part of Pennsylvania Blue Shield. The company was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Highmark (d/b/a Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield) in 1992. Over time, UCCI acquired, and today operates, eleven subsidiary companies licensed to transact health insurance and/or dental managed care in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. UCCI also maintains third party administrator licenses and utilization review agent certifications in a number of states. These licenses support United Concordia’s fully insured group and individual dental products and permit it to administer dental benefits for self-funded employers, as well as a number of federal government contracts.

Provider Networks

United Concordia operates several dental provider networks, the largest of which has more than 73,500 participating dentists at over 149,000 access points.

Large Contracts

United Concordia has administered dental benefits to military family members since 1996 through the Department of Defense’s (DoD) TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan (TFMDP) and the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP). The TDP provides dental benefits to the families of active duty service members, as well as National Guard and Reserve members and their families. More than 1.92 million members are enrolled in the TDP.

In 2008, United Concordia was also selected by the DoD to administer the Active Duty Dental Program (ADDP). The ADDP provides private sector dental care to ensure dental health and deployment readiness for 1.4 eligible active duty service members (ADSMs). The ADDP provides private sector dental care to ADSMs who are either referred from a military dental treatment facility (DTF) or are remotely located (50+ miles from a DTF).

United Concordia is one of four national carriers that have the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program (FEDVIP) contract. As of September 2010, more 131,322 federal employees, their families and annuitants have their dental benefits with us through this program. The contract has been in effect since December 2006.

Commercial Business

United Concordia provides dental insurance benefits to over 26,000 companies, state and local governments, unions and associations, including many of the top 100 Fortune® 500 companies.

Philanthropy
